Alan Chen. As a valedictorian and National Merit Finalist at South Hills High School in West Covina, he has participated in cross country running, community service, tutoring, and the National Science Bowl as captain. In his spare time, he enjoys editing Wikipedia and viewing open courseware online. He will be attending Pomona College in Claremont to study molecular biology. Striving for excellence while finding ways to help others, he plans to pursue a PhD and research ways to make life easier for others.

Daphne Chien is a graduate of El Monte High School. She will be attending Chapman University this fall and majoring in Business Administration. She enjoys playing the piano and the guitar during her free time. She plans to pursue an MBA after her four years in college and hopes to start an international business in the future. She is thankful to her mother who has supported her in every moment in her life.
Zerena Diaz graduated from Alhambra High School; she will be attending the University of California Berkeley and may pursue her interests in the fields of environmental science and psychology. Her hobbies are painting, sewing, and watching foreign films. She enjoys making art when in her free time. In the future, she plans on helping others, whether it is through environmental or medical efforts. She enjoys helping her community and aspires to continue these pursuits wherever she lives in her future.
Carrie Ho graduated from San Gabriel High School and will continue onto University of California, San Diego to major in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. With her college degree, she plans to attend medical school and become a doctor. In the future, she aspires to open up her own clinic and hospital to reinvest in the youth through scholarships and internships. In her free time, she likes to relax by spending time with friends and family, chatting, reading, watching drama/ movies, and volunteering.
Pu Fang Hung graduated from Diamond Bar High School and will attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She will be majoring in Biology and then attend medical school after college. Her first choice of medical school is University of Washington. She is set on becoming a surgeon and plans on working very hard in Carnegie Mellon towards her goals. She loves to read, especially novels involving solving mysteries. She plays the Chinese flute and enjoys going to the movie with her friends.
Sharon Jan is a recent graduate of the Orange County High School of the Arts, where she studied Creative Writing. Her time there led to her interest in screenwriting, for which she won a national award through the Young Arts competition. (She will also be featured with John Guare, a renowned playwright, in the second season of Masterclass, a documentary series on HBO). In her free time, she enjoys baking and riding her beach cruiser. She will attend Pomona College in the fall, tentatively as a Politics major.

Michelle Kung is best described as an ambitious, determined, and caring young individual. She is a National Merit Scholar with Distinction, CSF seal bearer, as well as a member of the National Honor Society. She also serves as Miss Taiwanese American 1st Princess. She will be attending Claremont McKenna College in the fall, majoring in Science and Management. Her dream is to become a doctor who can help people all over the world. Most of all, she wants to thank TACL for being such a wonderful organization and for giving her the opportunity of a brighter future.
Christopher Lai is 18 years old who recently graduated from Cerritos High School. He is an Eagle Scout and was President and Vice President in his high school National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation, respectively. He will be attending UCLA this fall in hopes of majoring in engineering. In his free time, he enjoys swimming, cooking, baking, exercising, hanging out with friends, biking, and reading about the environment. He hopes to pursue a career that helps the environment by finding new sources of energy and decreasing the human ecological footprint.

Charles Le graduated from San Gabriel High School. First, he would like to thank the scholarship committee for choosing him to be on of the recipients of this generous award. Secondly, he wants to thank his parents for pushing him to strive for success. This fall, he will attend UCLA with a major in History. He plans to further his education until he obtains a doctorate, and he will then enter the field of education. During his teaching, he wants to start a non-for profit organization that will provide education to children in third world countries.
Amy Lee graduated from Los Altos High School is a first generation immigrant to the United States from Taiwan. In elementary school, her inability to speak English and unfamiliarity with the behaviors of American kids created a barrier for her to become socialized. Nevertheless, she became extremely involved in high school extracurricular activities and the church she attended by taking leadership role in many aspects. She graduated high school in three years and has spent the last few months studying Mandarin with Mandarin Training Center at National Taipei Normal University. In fall 2010, she plans to study Experimental Animation at California Institute of the Arts.
Benjamin Lee is ranked 4th in Mark Keppel Class 2010. He will be attending UCLA in fall 2010 to follow the pre-med path as Biology major. Besides medicine, he has also found a calling in social activism. He has made it his life’s purpose to become the best physician and best social activist he can be to protect life and its qualities. Benjamin Lee hopes that he will grow as an individual in college as he cultivates his interest in medicine and social activism.
Jonathan Lin graduated San Marino High School. He is grateful to his family and TACL for providing him with support and the means to succeed academically. In high school, Jonathan played on the Varsity Tennis Team, was president of the TreeHuggers Environmental Club, and participated on the Math and Science Teams. He also does volunteer and community work as a proud Eagle Scout. In the fall, he will be majoring in Human Biology at Cornell University. He is interested in becoming a physician one day but is also interested in psychology, nutrition, and public policy.
Veronica Lin graduated from Temple City High School and will be attending UC San Diego in the fall. She is very passionate about the environment and has been President of her school’s Environmental Club for 2 years. She loves to run and is captain of her school’s cross-country team. She is also a 4 years red-shirt in the Peer Listeners Program, and is a part of the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation. She has written for her school’s newspaper for 2 years, and practices Chinese calligraphy everyday. She enjoys volunteering and hopes to continue in her time at college. To date, she has completed over 1000 hours of community service.
Kimberly Luu was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1992. She graduated from Temple City High and will be attending the University of California, Davis in the fall where she intends to major in neuroscience. During her high school career, she was the captain of the girls’ basketball team and has been an officer for both the American Cancer Society club and O’Ambassadors. On the side, Kimberly loves writing, reading, music, photography, boba runs, and spontaneously meeting up with her friends to spend quality time together. She also loves her family deeply and thanks them for supporting her through (almost) everything!
Frederick Peng recently graduated from Diamond Bar High School as one of thirteen valedictorians. In Fall 2010, he will be studying at Duke University in North Carolina as Biology major. He hopes to combine his passion to serve others with his love for the human body to attain a career in the medical field in hopes of one day being able to directly make an impact in saving the lives of others, particularly that of children. On his spare time, he enjoys working out, going to the beach, and watching Lakers Basketball.
Michelle Ruan was born in Guangzhou, China but immigrated to America at an early age. She graduated from Alhambra High School; Michelle will be attending UC Davis this coming fall. She plans to pursue dual degrees in English and International Relations. During High school, Michelle volunteered at the Alhambra Civic Center tutoring children, doing breast cancer research at the USC Norris Cancer Center, and saving the environment among other numerous activities. After being a tutor for nearly four years, she became the president of her school’s tutoring club, Academy of Future Educators (A.F.E). Besides all of the activities listed above, Michelle is an avid writer in both fiction and journalism. She is a Taiwanese American Citizens League journalism intern, while also writing for L.A. Youth and is one of Pasadena Star News’s student panelists. After attending California State Summer School for the Arts, Michelle was given the honor of California Arts Scholar. In the future, Michelle hopes to work as a foreign correspondent/journalist.
Patricia Song is a graduate of Mark Keppel High School and will attend UCSD in the fall. She hopes to double major in Communications and Environmental Science. She likes tea, watermelons, writing, Pikachu, and stuffed animals. She grew up appreciating the various cultures of the world and enjoys Asian humor more than that of Americans due to the fact that her parents usually watch Chinese films because of their lack of comprehension of the English Language.
Stephanie Wang graduated from Alhambra High School; she will be attending UCLA to study Bioengineering. In high school, she kept active through soccer, Key Club, student government, and volunteering at the local hospital, all of which have allowed her to emerge from my cocoon of timidity. She hopes to be just as immersed in campus organizations at UCLA and continue to fulfill her passion for community service. Inspired by her grandfather’s struggle with lung cancer, She plans to attend medical school and pursues a career in oncology to alleviate the pain of both cancer patients and their families.
Raymond Yang recently graduated from Alhambra High School. His hobbies revolve around going out with friends, as well as staying healthy by playing basketball and weight lifting. He will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall, majoring in Chemical Engineering with a special emphasis on environmental technologies. He hopes that in the future, he will be able to work with other engineers to solve the growing environmental issues that plague us today.
Lily Yin Lily Yin is a salutatorian of Arcadia High School Class of 2010 and the student speaker at the Baccalaureate ceremony. Lily speaks five languages: English, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and French. She is a golfer and synchronized swimmer; she also plays six eastern and western musical instruments. Lily began studying dance at the age of four, and practices all styles of dance: international ballroom, Chinese folk dance, ballet, jazz, lyrical, and hip-hop. As a dancer and musician, Lily is very active in the Chinese American community. Lily will be attending the Marshall School of Business of University of Southern California this coming fall.
