From the President:
Dear friends:

February held varying events and opportunities, ranging from our Lunar New Year Banquet, a cultural Tea event, a Tax Seminar, and a Big Bear Trip.  There also was a community concert to remember the 228 Incident that occurred in Taiwan 61 years ago. As a 2nd generation Taiwanese American, the knowledge of this historical event in Taiwan's history has helped to shape my identity today, and continues to remind us to value the life, freedoms, and Democracy we enjoy now.  It reminds me to continue to strive to improve upon our quality of life here in the US, and be thankful that people can currently enjoy similar freedoms now in Taiwan. To read more about this incident see this site: http://www.taiwandc.org/228-60.htm

March continues with a casual Happy Hour in West LA, a Professional Development Seminar dedicated to improving one's public speaking skills, and ends with a Social Networking Dinner/Mixer for March Madness, in which proceeds go towards our college youth and their ITASA Midwest Conference.

Please e-mail me if you are interested in getting more involved and helping with any of our upcoming events, especially the upcoming Taiwan Cultural Festival on May 10-11th, the Taiwan Cup Golf Classic on May 14, or our Annual Banquet Casino Night later in the summer.

Thank you,
TAP President

Taiwanese American filmmaker, Edward Yang, passed away in July of 2007 due to complications from a seven year battle with colon cancer. Mr. Yang was best known for his critically acclaimed film, Yi Yi, about a Taiwanese family coping with the serious illness of their elderly mother.

Yang's first major success "Taipei Story," gained world-wide attention in 1985. He followed that success with several other award winning films. Known for focusing on modern Taiwanese life and realistic problems, Yang's films have won numerous awards and are said to have a distinctive visual and narrative style. Critics praise Yang's films for their subtlety and minimal, yet powerful, dialogue.

In honor of Edward Yang and his wonderful work, please take the time to come view some of his most famous films with supporters of TaiwaneseAmerican.org and Taiwanese American Professionals SF Chapter.
