From the President: Hi friends: Last month was a busy month with Asian Pacific Heritage Month, and Taiwanese American Heritage Week. It was highlighted by the Taiwan Fest, the first and largest Taiwanese American Cultural Festival in the US, which had over 50,000 attendees. At the end of May, we held a successful fundraiser for the victims of the Asia Disasters, and raised a total of $1500 to be donated to the Red Cross International Response Fund. We also held a bone marrow drive and continue to encourage people to join the bone marrow donor database. You can still do so through A3M, to help such people as http://projectmichelle.com, who urgently needs a match for a transplant by June 21st. Register yourself by ordering a home kit here: http://www.aadp.org/pages/register.php. For June, TAP's affiliate held a successful Banquet & Award Ceremony on the 14th to honor our outstanding youth. The high school Taiwanese American Community Scholarship Award winners, the high school Journalism Interns, and the college Political Interns were all highlighted. We also honored outstanding alumni of TACL's programs, Charles Yu and Jay Chen It's reassuring to see the future of our community in young professionals, college and graduate, and high school. Come out to Blue Velvet on Friday, June 20th for a social to raise funds for the Asian Pacific Women's Center, help develop yourself professionally at a Career Development Seminar on June 22nd, and pass on to any high school students and parents the info on a free college admissions workshop on June 24th. Then, at the end of the month, TAP's cabinet and staff will be heading on their midterm retreat in Vegas. If interested in getting involved, e-mail me (ben.ling@tacl.org). Our 4th Annual Banquet & Casino Night is confirmed for Sept. 13th at the Kyoto Grand Hotel & Gardens. We are still looking for prizes and sponsorships. GET AN ADVANTAGE IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS: June 12, 2008- ROSEMEAD, CA - The Taiwanese American Citizens League, Los Angeles Chapter (TACL-LA) is proud to present this FREE college preparation workshop, open to the public, in conjunction with College Admissions Specialist Tammy Huang-Anacleto of College Launch.
Who: High School Students & Parents As admissions into top universities get increasingly more competitive, students find it essential to be constantly looking for the most effective ways to make their application stand above and beyond the rest. These days, stellar candidates need to possess much more than scores and statistics to make the cut. Community-conscious individuals exemplify intangible skills that demonstrate a level of maturity and a capacity for success that appeal to Admissions Officers. By getting involved in community service and extracurricular activities, especially by taking on leadership roles within community organizations make each student an even more appealing candidate. This workshop will help students better harness their extracurricular and community involvements to strengthen their college applications and enhance their chances of getting into their preferred universities.
About the Presenter: Established in 1985, TACL is a 501(c) 3 non-profit community organization that aims to foster leadership, identity, networking, and citizenship amongst the Taiwanese American community.
