From the President: Hi friends: June was another busy month that included a Real Estate Investing Workshop, TACL's Annual Banquet & Award Ceremony for our outstanding youth, a Social Fundraiser at Blue Velvet for APWC, a Career Development seminar, a college admissions workshop for high school students, and a midterm retreat for our cabinet. We were able to raise $1,600 for the Asian Pacific Women's Center from our Blue Velvet Social! Our cabinet headed to Vegas for a successful midterm retreat to reflect on the past year, and hash out the remaining few months of our term. While we recently took a short break , we still continue to support other community organization's events coming up, including the SCCLA Summer Associates Mixer on 7/24, TAJCC's 1st Annual Banquet on 7/25, Project by Project's Annual Tasting Benefit on 7/26, and Kollaboration's Acoustic Show 2, on August 2nd. Then at the end of August, we encourage our members to attend the NAAAP Convention August 21-24, and also the NATPA's Annual Banquet on August 23rd. Our next official event will be a Professional Seminar on Getting Into the Business School of Your Dreams on 7/27, followed by an LA Conservancy Tour on August 2nd, with an Info Lunch immediately following. Our biggest event of the year is also fast approaching. Save the Date, September 13th, for our 4th Annual Banquet & Casino Night at the Kyoto Grand Hotel & Gardens! Tickets are now available here: http://tapcasino.eventbrite.com/. Interested in sponsorship, prize donations, or ad placement that night? See our sponsorship packet. Our elections are also approaching in September. Interested in getting more involved? Have ideas, suggestions for our events? Contact VP Leslie Shei or myself. Thanks! Next TAP Events:

Join TAP to explore and learn more of the history of our local city, on an Art Deco Walking Tour with the LA Conservancy! Come to meet new and old TAP friends, while also increasing your awareness of many of the city’s historical architecture. Then after the tour, join us for an informational lunch to learn more about TAP! The Art Deco tour is an in-depth look at the history, materials, and style of Art Deco architecture popular in Los Angeles in the 1920s and 1930s. Officially debuted at the 1925 L'Exposition Internationale des Artes Decoratifs et Industriels Moderne in Paris, the style now known as Art Deco took the western world by storm. New, modern, and angular, the style was perfect for the machine age, and was used for everything from jewelry to teapots to skyscrapers. Typified by vertical lines, geometric patterns, and references to Gothic, pre-Columbian, and Egyptian art, Art Deco is stunning in its varieties of color and design. Downtown Los Angeles boasts an extraordinary collection of Art Deco buildings, due to a building boom during the heyday of this architectural style.
Length: 2-1/2 hours

Kollaboration - Acoustic Show 2 Competitors: Ken Oak Band, Jane Lui, Lady Danville, Richie Lam, Jennifer Chung, The Shinobies, Sam "Guenjin" Kang, Million Dollar Babies, Benny Mao, Tier2, Jaewon Choe, & Jason Arimoto. Guest Performers: Paul Dateh (Hip Hop Violinist) & Ken Belcher (Guitarist) Guest Comedians: Edwin San Juan & Ali Wong In graceful contrast to the high-energy tone of the organization's main annual show, Kollaboration Acoustic presents a relaxed and equally enjoyable version just in time for summer's end. With a focus on musical pieces that incorporate vocals, acoustic, guitar, and other non-electrical instruments, this outdoor show features artists with released albums and rapidly growing fanbases on the web. As is signature to our main show, stand-up comedians and a freestyle vocal competition aim to entertain with the unexpected. This special night in particular will also include a freestyle guitar competition – a first for Kollaboration! The John Anson Ford Amphitheatre sets the ideal ambiance for acoustic musings under the stars and Hollywood cityscape. Due to the tremendous amount of talent among young Asian Pacific Islanders, judges had a difficult time narrowing down the field. In the end, 12 talented acts were chosen to perform and compete during the show on August 2, 2008. The diverse selection of acoustic acts includes vocalists, guitarists and rap artists to compete for the grand, second and third prizes of $1,000, $300 and $200, respectively. Another premiere element at Kollaboration Acoustic is the Audience Choice Award by text message voting. This showcase of fresh musical talent will be judged by prominent celebrities and public figures, and expected to entertain over 1,200 attendees. Competing acts will be interspersed with guest performances by hip-hop violinist and Internet sensation, Paul Dateh and guitarist, Ken Belcher. Kollaboration's impressive history includes several successful shows in which past performers have received wide recognition and acknowledgements after their performances. Past performers include Far*East Movement (featured on Si TV Network, the AZN TV Network, UPN, C.S.I., and the Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift motion picture, video game and soundtrack) and David Bernal "Elsewhere" (featured on The Tonight show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, You Got Served motion picture, as well as TV commercials for 7-Eleven, Heineken, Volkswagen, and the Apple iPod). "Empowerment through Entertainment" Kollaboration is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the promotion of a strong Asian Pacific Islander presence in entertainment and media industry. Started in Los Angeles in August of 2000, Kollaboration has branched out to Chicago, New York, Toronto, Atlanta, and Washington D.C. Strengthening Freedom in Asia: A 21st Century Agenda for the US-Taiwan Partnership The Formosa Foundation is proud to be working with the American Enterprise Institute and co-hosting an event on August 6, 2008, during which the Taiwan Policy Working Group will present their groundbreaking report "Strengthening Freedom in Asia: A 21st Century Agenda for the US-Taiwan Partnership." Project leaders of the Taiwan Policy Working Group, Dan Blumenthal and Randall Schriver, will speak to the Taiwanese American community in Los Angeles on August 6. Dubbed "New road map for Taiwan," the joint project was undertaken chiefly by the AEI and Armitage International over the span of one year and with the contribution of many non-partisan scholars and experts. This report offers a new, pragmatic roadmap for putting U.S.-Taiwan relations back on a positive track and is designed to repair a relationship that has been a keystone of U.S. strategy in Asia for the past fifty years. Due to limited seating, please RSVP on or before August 1, 2008. By phone -- (213) 625-1991 By Email: Formosa@FormosaFoundation.org (send to this email with the names of attendees and email addresses) APEX Los Angeles Professional Networking Mixer Fee: FREE! The event, which will be held at Pasadena's Villa Sorriso on Thursday, August 7th, will focus on Asian Pacific Islander Americans representation in the media -- how APIAs are finally getting better media representation, and what people and organizations have done or have plans to do in the future to advance this trend more.
