From the President: Hi friends:
There are a wide range of events and opportunities that are available to you over the next few months, and during the summer that are included in this bulletin. They are divided into categories, from Upcoming TAP Events, Upcoming Community Events, Mentorship, Internships, and Leadership Development. I encourage everyone to take a look at the Leadership Development area, and see if you can attend any of the classes or conference meetings. TAP's aim is to help develop and support community-oriented leaders, in order to help increase our visibility in the community. The upcoming events vary from Community, Cultural, Social, Service, and Professional. They aim to bring and network Taiwanese Americans together, encourage participation in the Community, increase visibility for our group, and develop and improve our members professionally. The Internships that are mainly aimed at College students, all designed to give the interns valuable experiences, and develop them to be future leaders. The TACL Political Internship Program specifically is almost primarily run by leaders in TAP. Please help to pass on the information that may be of interest, or can benefit people you know. All of these events and info are also of course on the TAP website here: http://tap.tacl.org TAP will be collaborating with most of the local Taiwanese organizations on a major project over the next few months for all of the greater LA Community. We will be needing volunteers for various committees and staff ranging from Marketing, PR, and Design. If anyone is interested in these areas, think they have something to offer, and would like to help, please contact me for more information. It will be a great opportunity to gain valuable experience and community contacts. We also are looking for interested people to develop our Professional Series Programs further. Please e-mail me if you are interested to get more involved at any level, or have any comments or questions. Thank you. Ben Ling

TAP Volunteers Needed- Lunar New Year Parade & Festival On February 18th, KSCI-LA 18, the premiere Asian American TV channel 18, will be hosting the 2006 Annual Lunar New Year Parade and Festival at the historic Old Town Pasadena. The parade is special to Asian Americans as it's the only parade that the City of Pasadena has granted besides the famous Rose Bowl Parade on Colorado Blvd. It's also the largest Lunar New Year celebration in town! This event which is put on for the enjoyment of the greater public cannot happen without your help! Tons of people show up every year to enjoy the festivities, entertainment, food and family fun. What better way to celebrate the Lunar New Year, meet fellow Taiwanese-Americans and give back to the greater Asian community by helping out? We would love you to join us! Volunteers are the ones that really make a festival happen. You can sign up for one of two shifts: 10am - 2pm or 1pm - 5pm. PLEASE denote which shift you would like! Event details will be emailed to you after you sign up through evite. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kristine Wang! TAP/YGAP 2007 Taiwan Lantern Festival In spirit of the Lunar New Year, TAP and YGAP invite you to join us in a spectacular showing of lanterns from Taiwan! The Lantern Festival takes place on the fifteenth day of the first moon and is the start of a series of springtime celebrations. This holiday is widely celebrated by families all around Taiwan and China. On the night of the festival, children carry decorative lanterns depicting birds, historical figures, and any other theme. At this time of the year, decorative lanterns also adorn temples and streets. Sixteen years ago, the Taiwanese government started to host large-scale lantern festival events. Visually stimulating lantern sets were built upon commission by the government, and then displayed at various locations, especially the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Plaza in Taipei. And, over time, the lantern festivals in Taiwan have turned into quite a tourist attraction in Taiwan. Well, this year, for the first time in history, people here in the greater Los Angeles area will have an opportunity to see these large-scale, creative, stunning lantern sets!!! For the first time ever, some of these large lantern sets (averaging 30’ by 40’) will be shipped to our area for exhibitions in Los Angeles County and Orange County!!! These lantern sets depicts folk tales, historic figures, and others. It will be a sight you won’t want to miss! We plan to attend the first night of the exhibition in L.A. County on 2/24 and observe the lighting ceremony together. The exhibition will be held at Los Angeles Cultural Center, and TAP and YGAP officers will meet you at the parking lot entrance at the start of the event at 4pm. There will be small lanterns to be given away to KIDS, so feel free to bring your nieces or nephews or even a kid on the block! There will also be food vendors and stage performances. YGAP and TAP officers will meet you at the parking lot entrance at 4pm Questions?
