From the President:

Hi friends:

March saw record attendance at our social events! Over 60 people came to our Rowland Heights Dinner Group, with additional people who came after to meet at Dream Lounge. For the BLING themed party at Level 3 Hollywood, over 200 people signed up for our guestlist for a successful fundraising event. Pictures of many of our past events can be found here: http://tap.tacl.org/gallery.htm

A portion of the party proceeds will be going towards TAP and TACL's programs, ranging from our 20 year tenured Political Internship program, Entertainment Internship, Youth Leadership Camp, and other community events and causes.

March also saw a special opportunity for TAP members to meet, hear, and learn from a distinguished speaker talk specifically about Taiwan's situation. Bruce Herschensohn, author of "Taiwan: The Threatened Democracy" as a non-Taiwanese American, showed concern about the well-being of Taiwan and its Democracy, and related its situation in a way that the greater population could understand. TAP also lent support to the AB295 Bill, that would help to enhance Taiwanese identity, as well as other API ethnicities. So far it has passed through the first committee!

For April, continue to look for various events to help develop members. First, TAP is hosting a professional development seminar on Personal Finance. Next TAP Leaders are VIP guests to APEX's Community Leaders Reception. Then TAP is helping to support a fellow Taiwanese American Professional's company, which is sponsoring a different and new kind of event: drift racing! Mid April, TAP officers are off on their midterm retreat to plan the rest of the year.
note: TAP Coordinators and potential committee members are all welcome to attend this trip! Please contact Teiko or Ben if interested in attending and helping to get more involved with TAP!
Then look out for more networking and community events the rest of April, while TAP's President will be off to Taiwan for an Overseas Professionals Seminar!

We still need volunteers and participants! Please contact me at ben.ling@tacl.org or our Vice President Teiko.Sumiyoshi@tacl.org if you are interested in helping out as a coordinator or committee member for the upcoming SEMISCON concert on May 19th, or our Casino Night Annual Banquet in August. This is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable experience and to meet various community contacts, and you can also join us on our retreat in Vegas!

Ben Ling
TAP President

Dream>Plan>Track

Turn your dreams into reality by taking a three step approach to your finances:
DREAM>PLAN>TRACK.
Start by defining your dreams and goals, and by developing a clear vision of what you want to accomplish. Then, develop a personal financial plan of action which addresses gaps and presents solutions. Next, take action on your plan, tracking and reviewing progress towards your goals on a regular basis. The seminar will include a discussion on the 6 key areas of financial planning as defined by the Certified Financial Planning Board, and how you can effectively DREAM>PLAN>TRACK for future financial success.

After the seminar, join us for dinner nearby. Location TBA. Please note in reply if you will be attending dinner as well.

Come and join us for an afternoon of fun & games!

TAP will be volunteering on April 29th from 1-4pm at the 15th Annual Information Fair & Festival sponsored by Parents' Place at Cortez Park in West Covina. TAP volunteers will be helping out with the information booths as well as the game/prize booths. Free food will be provided by the Parents' Place for TAP volunteers - so come on out and be a kid again!

Parents' Place is a Family Resource Center in West Covina, serving families in the San Gabriel/Pomona areas. The Fair is dedicated to children with special needs, their families, and the professionals who work with them. This special occasion allows families that have children with special needs to come together and enjoy a lively festival, and to find out about the many community resources available to them.

United States District Judge HONORABLE RONALD S.W. LEW's Biography

Judge Ronald S.W. Lew was born in Los Angeles, the third of nine children. His father was a Chinese launderer who immigrated from Guangdong Province and operated the Mandarin Laundry in downtown Los Angeles. Judge Lew worked his way through school in his father's laundry business.

Upon graduation from Loyola University, Judge Lew commenced his study at Southwestern University School of Law. His legal education was interrupted by the draft. After serving as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, he returned to Southwestern and was admitted to practice law in 1971. He worked as a deputy city attorney for two and a half years before going into the private practice of law.

While in the last year of law school, Judge Lew married Mamie (who was born in Guangdong, China) and started their family. Judge Lew enjoys sharing his free time with his four children, spouses and grandchildren.

Judge Lew has been involved in public service for a number of years. He was appointed by Mayor Tom Bradley to the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pension Commission which he served on from 1976 to 1982. He was first appointed as a judge by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. in 1982 to the Los Angeles Municipal Court. He was then elevated by Governor George Deukmejian in 1984 to Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court.

On May 7, 1987, President Ronald Reagan appointed Judge Lew to the federal bench where he now serves in the Central District of California. He is the first Chinese-American appointed as a United States District Judge in the continental United States.

Always active in civic, community affairs, Judge Lew helped to establish the Chinatown Service Center, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association and the Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association. He is involved in a host of civic, community, church and legal activities, and currently sits on the following boards: The Chinese Heart Council; Southwestern School of Law; Friends of the Chinese American Museum; Federal Judges Association; the Federal Circuit Bar Association Judges Committee and the American Inns of Court. He also sits on the Committee on International Judicial Relations of the United States Judicial Conference appointed by Chief Judge Rehnquist.

He has sat on the board of the Committee of 100, CORO Southern California, and Pepperdine School of Law.
