PINOY SUNDAY (Taiwan/Philippines/Japan/France, 2010) Dir.: Wi Ding Ho; Scr.: Ajay
Balakrishnan, Wi Ding Ho
On their only day off, Filipino migrant workers Manuel and Dado discover a couch
left behind on a Taipei sidewalk. In a life where everything is arranged and all
possessions belong to the factory, the couch represents a chance to own something
of their own. Aware that carrying a heavy piece of furniture across town is both
ridiculous and illogical, the journey becomes an important metaphor for their attempt
to make an unpleasant factory dorm that much more like a home. The arduous walk
across the landscape is also an internal struggle — a journey that challenges notions
of manhood, friendships and family (35mm, 85 min., color, narrative, in Tagalog
w/E.S.)

TAP is very excited to announce that we are supporting the Heartfelt Foundation's
Annual Christmas Service Project.
THE HEARTFELT FOUNDATION is sponsoring a Christmas/Holiday party for hundreds of
children in-need from ages 1-15 living throughout the greater Los Angeles community.
Last year, more than 1,500 impoverished children and their families attended the
event. The event included ponies and a petting zoo, music, entertainment, hot food,
cookies and candy, refreshments and ice cream, clowns, music, games and activities,
a beautiful Santa's Village, and of course, Santa and toys for every child. 200
volunteers lent their hearts, hands and energy to providing a loving and transformational
experience for children in the most desperate of circumstances.
We invite you to volunteer to help us (and Santa) distribute gifts, toys, lead fun
activities and bring special cheer to these underprivileged children and their families.
The volunteer shift will be on Saturday, December 18 from 10am - 3pm. Volunteer
responsibilities may vary. Only 10 volunteer spots available! First come, first
serve basis till spots fill.
TAP will be accepting toy donations at our Christmas dinner and various locations
TBD. Toys collected will be distributed by volunteers at Heartfelt's Christmas party!

Michelle Ng with your availability.

TAP returns with our first dinner group of the year! Get your grub on as we eat,
mix and mingle for a good cause!
Charity: Operation Warmth
In the winter months, due to ocean breezes and desert terrain, southern California
can become extraordinarily cold at night despite being warm during the day. Seeing
as the economy has seen a significant downturn in the past year, thousands of people
have become or are homeless in the Los Angeles & Orange County metropolitan areas.
Operation Warmth hopes to provide a renewed sense of hope and vitality in the spirits
of all Californians.
Beginning in 2008, Operation Warmth is a special project that aims to provide the
homeless population of Los Angeles and Orange County with a warmer winter. During
the fall, volunteers for Operation Warmth collect new & gently used blankets and
coats for those in need. Items such as toiletries, backpacks, and first aid kits
are also collected for distribution. Once items are collected, they are sorted by
volunteers and distributed to various shelters in southern California. Over 450
new & lightly used blankets and coats were collected and distributed in the project?s
inaugural year. For the 2009-2010 winter, over 7,000 items were collected and distributed.
For more info, please visit http://www.operationwarmth.com.
We encourage you to bring an item to donate. Possible items to donate include
blankets, coast, toiletries, backpackes and first aid kits!
**********
We will be eating to our heart's content at Starry Kitchen in downtown LA! If you
haven't already heard the buzz on this eatery, it all began by serving food out
of one couple's apartment in North Hollywood. When the authorities were alerted
and closed down their operation, a struggling downtown restaurant offered up their
space without having to front the capital. Starry Kitchen is now a fully staffed
downtown restaurant with plenty of yummy bites for you foodies out there!

Join us on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at noon, for a statewide

CA 90071, to support the confirmation of Professor Goodwin Liu to the 9th Circuit
Federal Court of Appeals. Lunch and refreshments provided. Please RSVP to
Contact APABA
In an effort to engage the grassroots, educate the mainstream about diversity on
the bench, and change the media frame on Goodwin Liu’s nomination to the 9th Circuit,
the Asian American Justice Center, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association
and local Asian Pacific American (APA) bar organizations have launched a “Stick”
Up for Goodwin! initiative and companion website (www.confirmnow.org).
The website provides the story behind the initiative, the lack of APAs in the federal
judiciary, why Prof. Liu is important to the APA community, and other action items
such as the nomination of Magistrate Judge Edward Chen for the District Court in
the Northern District of California. The website also offers social media tools
and traditional action alerts to help engage community members, such as uploading
photos on how the stickers are used to increase visibility for the “Stick” Up for
Goodwin! initiative and to build momentum towards confirming Goodwin Liu, as well
as Ed Chen.
Be a part of history by joining us for the sticker distribution launch on September
21! News media are expected to cover the launch of the initiative. If you are interested
in helping distribute stickers after the launch, please email

Since the intrigue and interest in the occult is built in to the Taiwanese DNA,
TAP is delighted to present to you the San Gabriel Valley Urban Legend - The Haunted
Forest in Pasadena/Altadena. We will be going during the day time, however,
where there isn't anything spooky or haunted.
Enjoy the great outdoors and hike up to a San Gabriel Valley historic landmark as
you take in the breathtaking scenery. We will meet at the Iron Gates to the
Haunted Forest. Please park along Lake Avenue or Alta Loma, also known as
Gravity Hill. (If you went to high school in the San Gabriel Valley, you probably
spent some time there with friends; if you've never heard of it, Google it).
We are meeting early so it doesn't get too hot. From the Cobb Estate botanical
garden to Echo Mountain is 5 miles round trip with 1,400-foot elevation gain.
Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. This event is FREE for members.
If you're not a member yet, why don't you join already?!
The hike: From the great iron gate of the old Cobb Estate,
follow the trail along the chain-link fence. The path dips into Las Flores
Canyon, crosses a seasonal creek in the canyon bottom, then begins to climb. As
you begin your earnest, but well-graded ascent, enjoy good, over-the-shoulder views
of the San Gabriel Valley and downtown Los Angeles. Two long, steep and mostly shadeless
miles of travel brings you to a signed junction. Bear right and walk 100 yards along
the bed of the old Mount Lowe Railway to the Echo Mountain ruins. Just before the
ruins is a drinking fountain, very welcome if it's a hot day.
Up top, you'll spot the railway's huge bull wheel, now embedded in cement, and just
below is a pile of concrete rubble, all that remains of the railway depot. The steps
and foundation of the Echo Mountain House are great places to take a break and enjoy
the view straight down precipitous Rubio Canyon, the route of Lowe's railway. .
. Echo Mountain takes its name from the echo that bounces around the semicircle
of mountain walls. www.trailmaster.com

Kick off Taiwanese Heritage Week with a Taiwanese Food Fair at the Taiwanese
Center!
When you were growing up, did your family ever go to "bazaars" held by the Taiwanese
community? These food fairs were like daytime night markets.
This year, TAP-SD will have it's very first booth. If you would like to help us
make/sell "almond tofu", we'd appreciate the help! Make sure to show up on time
for this event. The popular foods always sell out fast!
More details of Taiwan Heritage Week events at the Taiwan Center are forthcoming.
