TAP is very excited to announce that we are supporting the Heartfelt Foundation Annual Christmas Service Project.
THE HEARTFELT FOUNDATION is sponsoring a Christmas/Holiday party for hundreds of children in-need from ages 1-15 living throughout the greater Los Angeles community.
Last year, more than 1,500 impoverished children and their families attended the event. The event included ponies and a petting zoo, music, entertainment, hot food, cookies and candy, refreshments and ice cream, clowns, music, games and activities, a beautiful Santa's Village, and of course, Santa and toys for every child. 200 volunteers lent their hearts, hands and energy to providing a loving and transformational experience for children in the most desperate of circumstances.
We invite you to volunteer to help us (and Santa) distribute gifts, toys, lead fun activities and bring special cheer to these underprivileged children and their families.
The volunteer shift will be on Saturday, December 19 from 9am - 3pm. Volunteer responsibilities may vary. [Our maximum number of volunteers is currently filled. But wait, No worries! TAP is also assisting the Heartfelt Foundation with collecting toys for the event!]
Please wrap the toys and indicate the gender and age group the toy is suitable for (ages 1-15). Please try to refrain from toys Made in China (out of safety concerns).
For toy drop off locations:
1. San Gabriel Valley. Contact: Joy Cheng or Ed Chen
2. West LA. Contact: Connie Hwang

The event is catered, and we'll have performers and a DJ! Join TAP-SF for one of its largest events of the fall season! We're expecting 300+ attendees at a wonderful venue!
[Bridge Mixer (Social Networking Event)]
During a difficult economy, it's more important than ever to strengthen our community bonds and connections! This isn't a job fair, but as many of us know, networking opens doors for opportunities. So why not start with fellow Taiwanese-Americans?
This social networking event is a function primarily aimed at the local college community in providing students with networking opportunities to working professionals within the TAP community. And it's an opportunity for our TAP members to continue connecting with each other.
Taiwanese and Taiwanese American Student Associations (TSAs and TASAs) from schools such as Academy of Art University, UC-Berkeley, Stanford, San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco, Golden Gate University, and others will be participating in this mixer.
To help everyone get better acquainted, we'll be leading some informal and fun ice breaker activities with the students and young professionals.
Food will be complimentary of Empero Taste restaurant located in the Outer Richmond of San Francisco. There will be enough for everyone to have a full course catered meal (fried rice, fried noodles, and a variety of Chinese entrees). Beverages included.
There will also be a live DJ (Evin Kepik) and live performances by Taiwanese American artists throughout different segments of the event.
The event will take place on October 10 between 5-9PM at 55 2nd Street. Don't miss out! We're expecting well over 300 attendees!
Cost: $10 if you prepay, $15 at the door

SINGER-SONGWRITER VIENNA TENG
She shares her name with the Austrian home of Mozart and Beethoven. And she herself studied classical piano from the age of five. But there's nothing old-world about the music of Vienna Teng, whose music brings to mind artists as diverse as Tori Amos, Simon & Garfunkel and Radiohead. A former Stanford computer science grad, and software engineer in Silicon Valley, she gave all that up to pursue her musical passions - a risky career move that has paid off. She has 3 critically acclaimed albums: 2002's Waking Hour, 2004's Warm Strangers, and 2006's Dreaming Through the Noise. They have landed on three Billboard album charts and reached #2 on Amazon's best-seller list. She's appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman and toured widely, opening for such artists as Shawn Colvin, Joan Osborne, Patty Griffin, Joan Baez and the Indigo Girls.
ASSEMBLYMEMBER TED LIEU
Represents the 53rd Assembly District covering the South Bay. Prior to his Assembly election in 2005, Lieu served on the Torrance City Council, as well as the City's Environmental Quality 7 Energy Conservation Commission. He worked tirelessly on issues that he continues as an Assemblymember - education, public safety, the environment and transportation. Dedicated to his country, Lieu currently holds the rank of Major in the US Air Force Reserves, and served on active duty for 4 years as a member of the JAG Corps. The Art Deco tour is an in-depth look at the history, materials, and style of Art Deco architecture popular in Los Angeles in the 1920s and 1930s.
Officially debuted at the 1925 L'Exposition Internationale des Artes Decoratifs et Industriels Moderne in Paris, the style now known as Art Deco took the western world by storm. New, modern, and angular, the style was perfect for the machine age, and was used for everything from jewelry to teapots to skyscrapers. Typified by vertical lines, geometric patterns, and references to Gothic, pre-Columbian, and Egyptian art, Art Deco is stunning in its varieties of color and design. Downtown Los Angeles boasts an extraordinary collection of Art Deco buildings, due to a building boom during the heyday of this architectural style.

GET AN ADVANTAGE IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS:
THE BENEFITS OF COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE
June 12, 2008- ROSEMEAD, CA - The Taiwanese American Citizens League, Los Angeles Chapter (TACL-LA) is proud to present this FREE college preparation workshop, open to the public, in conjunction with College Admissions Specialist Tammy Huang-Anacleto of College Launch.
Who: High School Students & Parents
What: How to utilize community leadership and service experience to gain an advantage in the college admissions process.
As admissions into top universities get increasingly more competitive, students find it essential to be constantly looking for the most effective ways to make their application stand above and beyond the rest. These days, stellar candidates need to possess much more than scores and statistics to make the cut. Community-conscious individuals exemplify intangible skills that demonstrate a level of maturity and a capacity for success that appeal to Admissions Officers. By getting involved in community service and extracurricular activities, especially by taking on leadership roles within community organizations make each student an even more appealing candidate. This workshop will help students better harness their extracurricular and community involvements to strengthen their college applications and enhance their chances of getting into their preferred universities.
About the Presenter:
Tammy Huang-Anacleto is an education professional and an expert in the college admissions process. She is the President of College Launch, the premier academic/college counseling firm in Pasadena. Tammy holds a Masters Degree in Teaching and Curriculum Design from Harvard University and is also a local Harvard Interviewer. With Tammy's leadership, College Launch has effectively counseled over 600 families and is proud to declare a 100% success rate of getting students accepted into at least one of their top five universities since 1998. Recently, Tammy contributed her expertise in the LA-18 documentary, "Getting-In: An Insiders Guide to Harvard Admissions." Additionally, Tammy has served on the board of TUF and YWCA.
Established in 1985, TACL is a 501(c) 3 non-profit community organization that aims to foster leadership, identity, networking, and citizenship amongst the Taiwanese American community. TACL focuses on youth development through programs such as the Political Internship for college students, the Journalism Internship for high school students, Youth Leadership Camps, and various scholarships offered throughout the year.

The 24th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival will take place May 1 - 8 at the Directors Guild of America. TUF, TAP and NATWA II are proud to co-present the following two feature films. One of them is a documentary about the endangered Lo-Sheng leprosy colony, the other is a drama played by Jaycee Chan in collaboration with Taiwan's premier percussion group The U Theatre. Screening of the two films will be from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday, May 3. A TUF - Post Movies Reception will follow immediately the screening of THE DRUMMER.

JOYFUL LIFE (LE SHENG)
(Taiwan, 2007) 50 min. Dir.: Anita Chang
Film Language(s): Mandarin, Minnan and Taiwanese w/E.S.
SAT, MAY 03 - 06:00 PM | Directors Guild of America, Theater 3
Lo-Sheng ("Joyful Life") leprosy colony was established in 1930 on the Sinjuang hillside in the outskirts of Taipei, Taiwan's capital. In 2002, more than one-third of Lo-Sheng was destroyed due to subway construction and other pending urban development projects. As a result, more than half of the 300 remaining residents moved into the newly constructed hospital nearby. Due to resident, student, and human rights activism, plans for total destruction have stopped. At this point, the sanatorium remains despite continued pressures from the government, private interests, and local civilians to evacuate. Conceived as a collaboration among the residents of Lo-Sheng, a Taiwanese-American filmmaker, documentary students, and cultural workers, filmmaker-lead workshops prepared residents for their own storytelling and filming, creating an intimate portrait of a historically marginalized community and their inspiring determination to protect what they call their home.
Showing in Program 19, on Saturday, May, 03 06:00 PM.

THE DRUMMER
(Hong Kong/Taiwan/Germany, 2007) 120 min. Dir./Scr.: Kenneth Bi
Film Language(s): Mandarin w/E.S.
SAT, MAY 03 - 07:00 PM | Directors Guild of America, Theater 1
A young Hong Kong rebel finds inner peace and a sense of purpose with a group of Zen musicians in the hills of Taiwan in THE DRUMMER, an entertaining blend of genre elements and spiritual content that plays much better than it sounds on paper. The incorrigible Sid (Jaycee Chan, son of Jackie) is caught in the bath with the wife of powerful triad boss Stephen Ma. Cocky Sid insults Ma in front of the latter's men. Ma demands both of Sid's hands on a platter from Sid's father, Kwan, who runs a rival gang, but owes Ma a favor. Kwan tracks down Sid and dispatches him to safety to Taiwan, in the company of deputy gang leader, Chiu. We find Sid and Chiu in a Taiwanese village, above which Sid one day finds a reclusive community of Zen drummers who also practice tai chi and martial arts. Mesmerized by their open-air exercises, Sid asks to join-and is tentatively accepted. By never taking itself too seriously, the film manages to stir a spiritual element-the mystical properties of traditional drumming-into what would have been a basic genre movie.
Showing in Program 20, on Saturday, May, 03 07:00 PM.

In addition, a music video SUBLINGUAL directed by Karen Lin, a former TUF grant recipient, will also be featured in the film festival:

SUBLINGUAL
(United States, 2008) Dir. Karen Lin

Two strangers pass one another in a restaurant booth. But is there something deeper between them, perhaps a relationship in a parallel life or just a passing coincidence? A heartfelt tale of timeless love from the director of Film Festival 2007 selection BYSTANDING.

TAP is very excited to announce that we are supporting the Heartfelt Foundation Annual Christmas Service Project. Last year, TAP was proud to be a part of the Heartfelt's 26th annual LA Christmas Service Project in downtown Los Angeles. More than 1,500 impoverished children and their families attended the event. The event included ponies and a petting zoo, music and entertainment, hot food, cookies and candy, refreshments and ice cream, clowns, music, games and activities, a beautiful Santa's Village, and of course, Santa and toys for every child. 200 volunteers lent their hearts, hands and energy to providing a loving and transformational experience for children in the most desperate of circumstances.
Please join TAP as a volunteer on Saturday, December 15, 2007 in our effort to support this worthy cause. Space is extremely limited, please sign-up by Thursday, December 6. The volunteer shift will be from 9am - 3pm. Volunteer responsibilities may vary.

Christmas is just around the corner!! TAP is inviting you to join our 2007 Christmas Party at Gonpachi Beverly Hills! Dine with TAP friends while enjoying delicious traditional Japanese food. It will be an exciting evening with new friends, networking, authentic food and a celebration of the holiday!!
Dining at Gonpachi is like taking a time machine back to medieval Japan. You experience HAND-POUNDED soba noodles, PERFECTLY GRILLED robata-style meats and vegetables, plus a variety of AUTHENTIC appetizers and dishes served just the way samurai enjoyed them. It also is a near exact replica of Gonpachi Tokyo, where Kill Bill was filmed!
There will be fun games and the famous White Elephant gift exchange near the end of the dinner party. So for those joining the party, please bring a wrapped $10-$15 gift. Only those who bring a gift, may participate in the game.
No one should know which gift you brought. Be creative! Be funny! Get in the spirit of the holidays!
Due to space limitations, there will only be 50 spots available, so please RSVP at your earliest convenience.
